Venice Canals Walkway, Los Angeles, CA

When visiting Venice Beach, make sure you head over to the Venice Canals Walkway. It is located right off 25th Street in Venice Beach. It consists of a neighbourhood of houses with four canals just around a quarter mile long each. Walk along the sidewalks and bridges to witness the beautiful view of the canals.

History

The Venice of America was created in 1905 as a beach resort town by a tobacco millionaire, Abbot Kinney. It was officially opened on July 4, 1905, with the goal of bringing a taste of Venice to America. He built his residential area and decided to dig miles of canals to drain the marshes. Years later, the city needed more roads and some of the canals needed to be filled in to pave them. It was not an easy ordeal because residents didn’t like the idea of filling their canals. After lots of court hearings, the Supreme Court ruled in 1928, and by the end of the year, almost all the canals were filled in. Only four canals remain, which serve as a tourist attraction in Los Angeles.

The Canals

The four canals offer a breathtaking view, making you feel like you are in Venice. It provides a perfect spot for walking and strolling for several minutes. They can go for about as long as you would want to stroll. It offers serenity, especially if you want a peaceful sight out of the chaos of Venice Beach. Almost every house on the Venice canals has a dock. The majority of residents own a boat. The atmosphere is laid back. Wouldn’t it be great to wake up and walk out your door with a view of the canal and explore the neighbourhood in your gondola? In every canal, there are bridges; two to three bridges connect the two sides of the canals. There are ample bridges, which makes walking easy. You can easily cut across to the adjacent sides.

The Houses

Another breathtaking view of the Venice Canals is the lavish houses lining the canals. The houses there cost millions of dollars, with the lowest price being around a million dollars. Check them out and you will not wonder why they cost that much. The houses are well-maintained and kept in tip-top shape. The lavish community is the primary reason why the cost of houses is a lot when compared to other houses in Los Angeles.

What to keep in mind when visiting the Venice Canals Walkway?

•	Come in early. It’s hard to secure parking in the adjacent streets to the canal as they are filled with homeless encampments.
•	The walkways are quiet and pristine early in the morning. If you want this kind of ambience, then come early when the place is not yet overcrowded.
•	Spend some time in the garden as it offers a nice view of the canal and surrounding areas.
•	The local government needs to address a few issues with cleanliness, especially in areas nearby the Venice Canals. So, keep your expectations low, but overall, the place is worth seeing.
