Russian Lip Filler

What You Need to Know

A different injection technique with a different result — vertical, lifted, heart-shaped. Not just more volume.

The Russian lip technique has become the preferred approach for patients who want fuller, lifted lips without horizontal spread — that "doll-like" shape with a defined cupid's bow. The difference isn't the product. It's the injection pattern.

What is the Russian Lip Filler Method?

Inspired by traditional Russian nesting dolls — small bow, lifted center — this technique creates a heart-shaped cupid's bow by adding volume and lift to the middle of the lips while keeping the sides in line with the face. The result reads as naturally fuller, with vertical lift rather than horizontal widening.

For patients with previous filler from another technique, we typically recommend removing existing filler (with hyaluronidase) two weeks beforehand so the new volume can concentrate in the lip's center as designed — rather than building on top of an existing horizontal base.

How Does It Differ From Traditional Lip Filler?

Traditional lip filler uses horizontal injection along the lip body for uniform fullness — broader, classic Western styling. The Russian technique uses a smaller syringe and a vertical microdroplet approach focused on the lip center.

  • Technique: vertical microdroplet placement vs horizontal volume distribution
  • Result: heart-shaped cupid's bow + vertical lift vs uniform horizontal fullness
  • Time: 30–60 minutes due to the precision required for each microdroplet
  • Recovery: bruising and swelling are normal for 24–72 hours — slightly more than traditional lip filler because the technique uses more injection points
  • Duration: 6–12 months, same as traditional HA filler — the technique is different; the product longevity is the same

Is It Right For You?

Russian lips work best for patients who want:

  • More definition at the cupid's bow + lifted center
  • Fuller appearance without their lips reading "wider"
  • A more dramatic, stylized look (vs the most natural-look option)

They may not be right for patients who want pure subtle enhancement, who have minimal natural lip structure to build on, or who can't take 2–3 days for swelling and bruising to settle. Your injector will evaluate your lip anatomy in consultation and recommend the technique that fits your face.

Specialist Injectors at Skinsation LA

Many providers in Los Angeles don't offer the Russian technique — it requires specific training and a steady hand for the vertical microdroplet pattern. At Skinsation LA, both of our primary injectors (Holly Adamous, MSN, RN, FNP — known as "Feather Fingers" by clients — and Farah Chahine, PA-C, MMS — "The Fairy Injector") have trained extensively in the Russian method. We treat several Russian-lip clients each week.
