The Technique

A different way to inject lip filler

Russian lip filler is a placement technique, not a different product. The injector uses vertical-line injections from the wet/dry border outward — instead of the horizontal lines used in traditional lip augmentation. The result is a lift rather than just a plump: heart-shaped projection, enhanced cupid's bow, more upturn at the corners.

The technique originated with Russian aesthetic injectors and gained traction internationally as clients started asking for "Bratz lips" and "heart lips" — shapes that traditional horizontal placement can't produce as effectively. Russian technique solves a specific problem: it lifts the lip from the inside outward, exposing more of the wet vermilion border (the pinker, more visible part) and giving the lip a more upturned, projected shape.

Two important caveats: Russian lip filler is more technique-dependent than traditional. The vertical-line precision matters — done poorly, results look bumpy, asymmetric, or "stacked." Done well, the result is delicate and natural-looking. We use full-syringe (1.0 mL) for the technique because half-syringe doesn't produce enough lift to justify the placement strategy.

And: Russian technique typically lasts 6-9 months versus 9-12+ months for traditional placement. The more superficial placement breaks down faster as the lip moves. Many clients consider this an acceptable tradeoff for the shape; some don't.

Best candidates
  • Naturally thin upper lip you want to lift
  • Downturned mouth corners (sad-mouth correction)
  • Flat or absent cupid's bow
  • Heart-shaped lip aesthetic ("Bratz lips," "Russian doll lips")
  • Existing horizontal filler that didn't produce enough projection
  • Clients who prioritize shape over maximum volume

Russian vs Traditional

What makes Russian technique different

  1. 01

    Placement axis

Traditional: horizontal lines along the lip body, adding volume uniformly. Russian: vertical lines from the wet/dry border outward, lifting the lip and exposing more of the wet vermilion.

  2. 02

    Result shape

Traditional: fuller, plumper lip body — the entire lip swells outward. Russian: heart-shaped projection at the cupid's bow + lifted corners + more visible "wet" part of the lip.

  3. 03

    Volume vs shape

Traditional holds more volume per syringe — better for maximum plumpness. Russian uses the same syringe for shape redistribution — better for definition.

  4. 04

    Longevity tradeoff

Traditional: 9-12+ months. Russian: 6-9 months. The shorter longevity is the cost of the more superficial placement that creates the lift.

FAQ

Russian Lip Filler Questions

What is Russian lip filler?

Russian lip filler is a technique — not a product. The injector places HA filler in vertical lines from the wet/dry border outward (instead of horizontal placement) to lift the lip and create a heart-shaped, more upturned projection. Same FDA-approved HA fillers as traditional lip augmentation; different placement strategy.

How is Russian lip filler different from traditional lip filler?

Traditional lip filler is placed horizontally to add volume uniformly across the lip body. Russian technique uses vertical injections from the wet/dry border outward — this lifts the lip rather than just plumping it, creates a heart-shaped projection, enhances the cupid's bow, and gives more upturn at the corners. Different look, same fillers, similar pain level.

Who is a good candidate for Russian lip filler?

Best for clients who want shape definition over volume — people with naturally thin upper lips, downturned corners, or flat cupid's bows. Not ideal if you want maximum plumpness (traditional horizontal placement holds more volume) or if you have very small lips with limited tissue to work with.

Does Russian lip filler last as long as traditional?

Slightly shorter. Russian technique typically lasts 6-9 months versus 9-12+ months for traditional placement. Reason: vertical injections place product more superficially where lip movement breaks it down faster. Many clients accept the shorter timeline because they prefer the upturned shape.

How much does Russian lip filler cost in Los Angeles?

At Skinsation LA, Russian lip filler is priced like a full-syringe lip filler treatment — $700 for 1.0 mL. The technique requires the full syringe to achieve the heart-shaped projection; ½ syringe doesn't produce enough lift. Some clients book 2 syringes for fuller projection ($1,400).

Does Russian lip filler hurt more than traditional?

About the same. Topical numbing + lidocaine in the filler manages most discomfort. Some clients report Russian technique feels slightly more intense because of the vertical-line injection pattern, but the total session pain is comparable.

Will Russian lip filler look fake or "ducky"?

When dosed conservatively and placed by an injector who knows your face, no. The "ducky" look comes from over-volumization OR poorly distributed product, not from the technique itself. Russian technique done well looks delicate, lifted, and natural — kissable, not duck-like. Bad results usually trace to dose or judgment, not technique.

Can Russian lip filler be dissolved?

Yes. Russian lip filler uses the same hyaluronic acid products as traditional lip augmentation, so it's fully reversible with hyaluronidase if the result isn't what you wanted. From $250 per area for dissolving.
