Lip Filler Aftercare + Recovery Guide
Lips swell more than other filler areas. Plan a quiet 24-48 hours and follow these instructions for the best settled result.
First 24 Hours
Do:
- Apply ice wrapped in a cloth — 10 minutes on, 10 minutes off — for the first few hours to manage swelling
- Sleep with your head slightly elevated the first night
- Drink water at room temperature, sip from a glass (not a straw)
- Eat soft foods that don't require wide mouth movement
- Take Tylenol if needed for discomfort (avoid ibuprofen for 24 hours)
Don't:
- Press, massage, or pucker your lips unless your provider specifically instructed
- Use straws, smoke, or do anything that creates a tight lip seal for 24 hours
- Apply lipstick, lip gloss, or lip balm for 12 hours
- Drink very hot or very cold beverages for 24 hours
- Exercise vigorously, sauna, or steam for 24 hours
- Drink alcohol for 24 hours (increases bruising risk)
- Kiss aggressively or do anything that compresses the lips for 24 hours
Days 2-14
- Days 2-3: Peak swelling. Lips may look larger than the final result — this is normal. Bruising at injection points possible.
- Days 4-7: Swelling subsides; the true shape begins to emerge.
- Day 14: Filler has fully settled. Final shape and volume are visible. If you want a touch-up or refinement, schedule with your injector.
Protecting Your Result
- Hydrate well — hyaluronic acid filler attracts water; dehydration can shorten longevity
- Use SPF on your lips (lip balm with SPF 30+) to slow filler degradation
- Avoid extreme heat (saunas, hot yoga) for 1 week — heat accelerates filler breakdown
- Plan touch-ups every 6-12 months depending on the filler type used
How Long Does Lip Filler Last?
Hyaluronic acid lip filler typically lasts 6-12 months. Russian lip technique tends to last on the shorter end (6-9 months) because the placement is more superficial; traditional augmentation can last 9-12+ months.
- HA product: Volbella tends to be subtler and shorter-lasting (6-9 mo); Kysse and Restylane Silk last 9-12+ months
- Lip activity: frequent talking, chewing, and lip movement breaks filler down faster
- Hydration: well-hydrated tissue holds filler better; dehydration shortens longevity
- Heat exposure: saunas, hot yoga, and prolonged sun accelerate HA breakdown
