How Often Should You Get Botox? It Depends on the Area

Most areas of the face are treated every 3 to 4 months, but not every area is on the same clock. A lip flip wears off in 6 to 8 weeks. Masseter Botox holds 4 to 6 months. The difference comes down to the size of the muscle, how hard it works through the day, and the dose it takes to relax it. Here is how the timing runs area by area at Skinsation LA in Los Angeles, and how we set a maintenance schedule that fits your face rather than a calendar.

Brows, lips, and the corners of the mouth run on a shorter clock than the forehead; the masseter runs on a longer one.

How long does Botox last in each area?

Botox at Skinsation LA typically lasts 3 to 4 months, with results showing in 7 to 14 days and a touch-up at two weeks if one is needed. That is the standard window for the upper face: horizontal forehead lines, the frown lines between the brows, and crow's feet all hold about 3 to 4 months. A Botox brow lift develops over 3 to 7 days and lasts about the same, and many people maintain it with a repeat treatment a few times a year.

Two areas sit outside that window. A lip flip lasts 6 to 8 weeks, shorter than traditional Botox, because the lip muscles are used constantly for eating, drinking, and speaking. Masseter Botox lasts 4 to 6 months, longer than cosmetic Botox because of the higher dose.

Our Instagram guide, embedded below, groups the areas we treat into three windows: brows, the lip flip, and the corners of the mouth in the shortest; forehead lines, frown lines, bunny lines, crow's feet, and chin dimpling in the middle; the masseters and the neck in the longest. Our lip flip page is more specific than the guide, at 6 to 8 weeks, and that is the figure we plan around. Every area is dosed individually, and most clients combine two or three zones in one visit, so a single appointment can hold areas that run on different clocks.

Why doesn't every area wear off at the same rate?

Botox temporarily relaxes the targeted muscle. It is temporary by design: muscle activity gradually returns, which is also what keeps the look natural over time. How fast it returns depends on the muscle. Botox works by inhibiting acetylcholine release at the neuromuscular junction, and areas with larger or more habitually active muscles may need different dosing and can show different patterns of effect duration.

Dose is the other half. Botox Cosmetic is FDA-labeled for glabellar lines, crow's feet lines, forehead lines, and platysma bands in the neck, with dosing individualized to each patient rather than fixed by treatment area. On our Botox page you can see the unit ranges we work within for each zone, from the forehead to the neck bands; the exact number for your face is set in the chair, because muscle strength and clinical assessment, not a chart, determine the amount used.

How often should you get masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox lasts 4 to 6 months. Heavy clenchers and grinders may need it every 3 to 4 months early on; spacing extends after two or three sessions as the muscle reduces. The evidence lines up with that pattern. In the masseter, treatment effect is tied to how the muscle is reinnervated and to its mass: animal studies show the neuromuscular connection is still recovering a month after injection, with the muscle's response returning only gradually. Systematic review and ultrasound elastography data show that repeated masseter injections are associated with measurable reductions in muscle bulk and stiffness over time, which is why some people see longer gaps between sessions as the muscle responds to cumulative treatment.

A Cochrane review describes botulinum toxin type A in the masseter as a less invasive option for muscle reduction and notes that evidence on the optimal retreatment timing is still limited. That is one more reason we set the interval by how your jaw responds rather than by a fixed date.

How often can you get a lip flip?

A lip flip places 4 to 8 units of Botox into the orbicularis oris, the muscle that circles the mouth. The initial flip shows in 3 to 5 days, the full result in 7 to 10 days, and it lasts 6 to 8 weeks before a refresh. It is fully reversible as the Botox wears off. Most people repeat it on that 6 to 8 week rhythm; the timing is confirmed at each visit, and the aim is a refresh once the last one has faded, not a date on the calendar. Because it is a small dose in a busy muscle, the lip flip is the clearest example of why one maintenance schedule cannot cover the whole face.

Does Botox last longer the more you get it?

Often, yes. First-time treatments may be slightly shorter, around 10 to 12 weeks, because muscle memory has not yet softened. With consistent treatments every 3 to 4 months, longevity often extends to 4 to 5 months. Dose matters here too: proper unit dosing for the muscle size gives the full duration, and under-dosing reads as "Botox didn't work." Our Botox aftercare page walks through the other factors we see, from activity level to body chemistry, and what to expect in the first two weeks.

One face, several clocks. The interval is set by the muscle, not the month.

How we set your maintenance schedule

It starts at a consultation. Botox at Skinsation LA is performed by Holly Adamous, MSN, RN, FNP and Farah Chahine, PA-C, MMS, with medical oversight from Dr. Galustian. Your injector maps the areas you want treated, doses each one for its muscle, and sets a return window per zone: a lip flip refresh may land between two forehead visits, and a masseter session may skip one entirely. If you have a wedding or event, book about two weeks ahead so the treatment has taken full effect with room for a quick touch-up. For a broader walk-through of what Botox treats and what to expect at the visit, our Botox guide covers it.

What to settle at your consult
  • Which areas are in the plan, and which clock each one runs on.
  • First treatment or maintenance visit. First treatments often run a little shorter.
  • How the return windows stack. One visit can cover a 6 to 8 week area and a 4 to 6 month area.
  • Any event on the calendar, so the appointment lands about two weeks ahead of it.

Our office is on San Vicente Boulevard in Carthay Circle, and we see Botox clients from across Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, and West Hollywood.

The short version
  • Forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet typically hold 3 to 4 months.
  • A lip flip lasts 6 to 8 weeks; masseter Botox lasts 4 to 6 months.
  • The interval follows the muscle: its size, how hard it works through the day, and the dose it takes.
  • Consistent treatment every 3 to 4 months often extends results to 4 to 5 months.
  • Every area is dosed individually, and the schedule for each zone is set at a consult with Holly Adamous, MSN, RN, FNP, or Farah Chahine, PA-C, MMS, under Dr. Galustian's medical oversight.

FAQ

Botox Timing FAQ

How long does Botox last in each area?

Forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet typically hold 3 to 4 months. A lip flip lasts 6 to 8 weeks. Masseter Botox lasts 4 to 6 months. Every area is dosed individually, so your injector confirms the interval for each zone at your visit.

Why does a lip flip wear off faster than forehead Botox?

A lip flip uses 4 to 8 units in the muscle that circles the mouth, and that muscle works constantly for eating, drinking, and speaking. Areas with more habitually active muscles can show different patterns of effect duration, so a small dose in a busy muscle releases sooner.

How often do you get masseter Botox?

Masseter Botox lasts 4 to 6 months, longer than cosmetic Botox because of the higher dose. Heavy clenchers and grinders may need it every 3 to 4 months early on; spacing extends after two or three sessions as the muscle reduces in bulk.

How often can you get a lip flip?

A lip flip lasts 6 to 8 weeks before a refresh, so most people repeat it on that rhythm. Your injector confirms the timing at each visit; the aim is a refresh once the last one has worn off, not a fixed calendar date.

Does Botox last longer the more you get it?

Often, yes. A first treatment may run slightly shorter, about 10 to 12 weeks, and with consistent treatments every 3 to 4 months longevity often extends to 4 to 5 months. The interval is set by how your muscle responds, not by a countdown.

Do bunny lines, chin dimpling, and the corners of the mouth follow the same timing?

Our Instagram guide groups the corners of the mouth with the shorter window, and bunny lines and chin dimpling with the standard 3 to 4 month window. These are small, individually dosed areas, so the interval for each one is set at your consultation.
