The shortest railway in the world is tucked in downtown Los Angeles. It’s quite ironic though because Los Angeles is not that known for trains and rails. It’s a historic funicular and it goes up to one of the downtown’s steepest hills, Bunker Hill. It’s a short railway though, not the ones you typically see. On an incline, it runs just 298 feet, but don’t underestimate for it has been one of the favorite settings for Hollywood films. Not to mention, it is also placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Angels Flight Railway was built in 1901, but the location was half a block away connecting two streets; Hill Street and Olive Street in Bunker Hill. At that time, these streets consist of a high-end residential neighborhood. Angels Flight Railway continue to operate there, but in 1969 the site was cleared for redevelopment. In 1996, Angels Flight Railway opened at its current site and it connects Hill Street and California Plaza. It still has its original tracks and cars which had undergone restoration and upgrade and serves mainly as a tourist attraction. Some downtown workers used it too. in 2017, Angels Flight Railway reopened after undergoing safety enhancements.
