What Is a Lip Flip with Botox?

A lip flip is one of the most subtle, lowest-commitment ways to enhance your smile — and one of the most misunderstood. It uses a few units of Botox, not filler, to gently roll your upper lip outward for a softer, fuller look. Here's exactly what it does, how it's different from lip filler, and what to expect at our Los Angeles studio.

What is a lip flip, exactly?

A Botox lip flip is a quick injectable treatment where we place a few units of Botox into the muscle that runs along your upper lip border (the orbicularis oris). Relaxing that muscle lets the edge of your upper lip gently "flip" up and outward, so a little more of your natural pink lip shows — especially when you smile. It creates the appearance of a fuller upper lip without adding any volume.

A lip flip uses Botox to reshape the lip you already have. Filler adds new volume. They're two different tools — and they pair beautifully.

Lip flip vs. lip filler

This is where most people get confused — and where a lot of bad information lives online. A lip flip and lip filler do genuinely different things:

How to choose
  • Lip flip (Botox): a subtle, natural tweak — more upper-lip show and a softer gummy smile, with no added volume. Lasts about 6–10 weeks. The lowest-commitment option.
  • Lip filler (hyaluronic acid): real, buildable volume and definition using a dermal filler gel. Lasts roughly 6–18 months.
  • Together: a flip plus a touch of filler gives you shape and volume — one of our most-requested lip combinations.

What to expect

The treatment itself takes about ten minutes. We can apply a topical numbing cream first, then place a few tiny injections along your upper lip. There's essentially no downtime — most people head straight back to their day. Your flip settles in over 3 to 7 days and lasts around 6 to 10 weeks, which is shorter than filler because it's such a small amount of Botox.

After your lip flip

Skip straws, pursing your lips, and intense exercise for the rest of the day, and avoid rubbing the area while it settles. Give it a few days to take full effect before judging the result — and use a straw-free sip of water as your test, not the mirror at hour one.

Is a lip flip right for you?

A lip flip is a great fit if you want a subtle enhancement rather than a dramatic change — a bit more lip show when you smile, a softer gummy smile, or a low-stakes way to test the waters before committing to filler. Because it's quick and temporary, it's also an easy "first injectable." At Skinsation LA, our lip flip treatment is performed by our aesthetic injectors, Holly Adamous, FNP and Farah Chahine, PA-C.

The short version
  • A lip flip is Botox, not filler — it adds no volume.
  • It relaxes the upper-lip muscle so the lip rolls outward for a subtle, fuller look.
  • Results appear in 3–7 days and last about 6–10 weeks.
  • Filler adds real volume and lasts longer; the two pair well together.
  • Quick (~10 minutes), with minimal downtime.

FAQ

Lip Flip FAQ

How many units of Botox is a lip flip?

Usually around 4–6 units placed along the upper lip border. It is a small amount — which is exactly why the result is subtle and why it wears off sooner than Botox used for wrinkles.

How long does a lip flip last?

Typically 6–10 weeks. Because it uses such a small dose of Botox, it fades faster than lip filler (which lasts months) — so many people maintain it with a quick repeat treatment.

Lip flip or lip filler — which should I get?

A lip flip is best for a subtle tweak and a little more lip show with no added volume. Filler is best when you want real, lasting volume and definition. Many people combine the two. A quick consultation is the best way to decide.

Does a lip flip hurt?

Very little. The injections are tiny and take only a few minutes, and we can apply a topical numbing cream first. Most people describe it as a brief pinch.

Can I get a lip flip and filler at the same time?

Yes — pairing a lip flip with a small amount of filler is popular, giving you both shape and volume. Your injector will plan the right combination and timing for your lips.
